Taíno Protective Guardian Necklace of Cueva Peñón Gordo

This sculptural amulet embodies protection, awareness, and steady vigilance. Designed to be worn close to the body, it represents a watchful presence that sees in all directions and stands as a symbolic shield at life’s thresholds.

The figure is defined by its most striking feature: multiple eyes. Eyes appear not only in the head, but also in the hands—suggesting protection through both perception and action. This unusual anatomy symbolizes constant alertness, clarity of intent, and the ability to respond wisely rather than react blindly.

Balanced in proportion and comfortable to wear, the amulet has a grounded weight and a tactile presence that invites touch, reflection, and intentional use. It can be worn daily, used during meditation, or placed in a personal or sacred space as a reminder of inner strength and watchfulness.

Origin & Inspiration:

This amulet is inspired by an ancient guardian figure found in Cueva Peñón Gordo, a cave site in the Dominican Republic known for its rare Indigenous pictographs. Unlike most cave art in the region, these images were painted in white pigment, giving them a distinctive and almost otherworldly presence.

The original guardian figure is highly unusual: it features eyes in both the hands and the head, an iconographic detail rarely seen in Caribbean cave art. Nearby, a simple smiling face appears, suggesting a protective and benevolent role rather than one of threat.

Caves held deep spiritual significance for the Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, often serving as sacred spaces and symbolic gateways between worlds. Guardian figures such as this one are thought to represent watchers of thresholds, protecting what lies within.

This amulet is a contemporary interpretation, created in respect of that ancestral imagery—offered not as a replica, but as a symbolic object that carries forward the enduring idea of protection, awareness, and guardianship.
